Dear Prospective Peer Mentor :

One of the greatest contributors to success at college is a sense of belonging and connection with the University.  Asian Pacific Student Programs would like you to invite you to become a Peer Mentor for the 2009-2010 school year. The Peer Mentor Program offers a variety of services to UCR's first year students.  Peer Mentors serve as a guides to UCR's many resources in order to make the adjustment into college life and culture a smooth one. Peer Mentors assist students making the most of their college experience, helping them discover opportunities for personal, academic, and social growth.

APSP's Peer Mentor Program helps new students develop connections that will help them adjust to the college atmosphere and provide an opportunity for them to get involved with both the campus and the community. We bring students together through social gatherings and events where they would have the opportunity to interact with others in a safe space to discuss any issues a college student may face.

So, if you want to meet new people, make new friends, and be a part of a challenging, but supportive community, sign up to become a Peer Mentor for Asian Pacific Student Programs.

Tips and Advice for First Years

How do you survive and succeed during your first year at UCR? With a little help from your friends in APSP. Here's a collection of tips and advice we've collected from all around campus to help get you through your first year. As Bruce Lee once said, “Take what is useful (and use the rest as a doorstop)!” ...

•  Take it slow and easy on your classes.

•  Don't get into a serious relationship first quarter, you'll miss out on a lot of opportunities on meeting new people.

•  Live your life. Follow your heart. Trust your instincts.

•  Don't be shy. Ask questions. Be friendly.

•  Find an environment that works for you. Some people study better in groups than on their own.

•  Make friends with your TA, they're probably grading your exams.

•  Never buy books from the bookstore. Other places are the textbookz.com and University Book Exchange (UBE) on Box Springs Dr.

•  Don't give up! Doing some studying is better than none.

•  If you need money, look no further than UCR. There's more jobs than serving food.

•  Go to Prof. and TA office hours.

•  Find shortcuts and quicker ways to get to class.

•  Join a recreational group… dance, martial arts, whatever but keep the weight off.

•  Go to class, even after a midterm.

•  Shower.

•  Use the campus safety escort service when walking back to the dorms after 6pm

•  Use your paper quota

•  Apply for financial aid, even when you think you won't get anything, apply anyways!

•  UBE is cheaper than the bookstore

•  Half.com is cheaper than the UBE.

•  Borrow books from your hallmates or friends, it's the cheapest.

•  Sharing a book with a classmate is not a good idea because you will both need it at the same time when it comes to studying for exams.

•  TAs are your friends, talk to them, they are students too

•  Movie tickets are cheaper at the student exchange

•  Get involved on campus and get out of your room!

•  Don't let your rec center fee go to waste… you WILL gain the freshman 15

•  Do not be afraid to see help when you need it!

•  Get to know your professors. You never know what they can help you with, plus you will need letters of rec when you apply to grad school, etc.

•  Don't spend money on unnecessary items… you never know when your car will break down.

•  Find off campus housing after the dorms, and start early! Don't wait til summer.

•  Know how to manage time.

•  Figure out when and where your exams are!

•  Don't sign up for credit cards (no matter how many Frisbees and mini basketballs they offer you)!

•  Figure out where your professors and TAs' offices are!

•  Balance your time!

•  Work out. It give you more energy if you're not lethargic.
